Learning

This fledgling managed to get himself under the mulberry tree. First he went over to a pigeon thinking the pigeon would supply food. The pigeon flashed him off. Then the fledgling looked to me. I made it clear that I was not the catering service. And then seemingly by accident he found food on the ground, the same thing the pigeons were pecking at. Ripe mulberries. Normally the parent would ram a berry down its gullet. Now the fledgling was doing it on its own. I wish the berries didn't have stems, because those stems can cause the baby to have a problem, fodder for pellets.

This kid is going to have a tummy ache, but finding his own food is very important. He can't tug worms yet.

Feed me!!!!!

I make a plan. Go to the park! But I get downstairs and never leave the grounds. There's fun activity going on right in the garden. The Feed-Me gang, with skinny parents working non-stop to satisfy voracious appetites.

Some of the fledglings are getting inquisitive and semi-independent, but often they pick up things that can't be eaten or don't know what to do with the food.

This baby found a puddle, but wouldn't let the juvenile starling join in.

However, the next juvenile was acceptable. No fuss. Go figure.

I can't not watch these kids. They're so beautiful.

Sunday morning

Saturday evening had been eerily quiet, a bit worrisome, totally different from other evenings, but yesterday morning there was lots of activity. It will take three postings to cover all that was going on.

The sparrows eat seeds from the weeds. Mama was feeding her baby. Second baby came down and pounced on sibling. Nothing gentle about it. Potential killer sparrow??

Eating is main actvity in the garden.

I heard the voice. Amahl. He has a distinctive call. Follow the voice, find Amahl. He's doing fine. Still likes that one perch, but flies well now.

The Friday baby from the ivy leaves is doing fine. Parent feeding this sweet new fledgling. It's still a ground explorer. Hopefully it will learn to avoid the driveway.

Lots of food pictures to follow as well as a different surprise.

Red and green

There is a cardinal family in the garden, much more elusive than the robins. For several days the father has been food hunting high inthe trees.

I saw him come zooming down to the ground for a leaf. Oh, wow! Not a leaf. Another huge bug.
I would love to see one of these bugs alive.

Last evening was noticeably more quiet in the garden. No sign of the ivy baby robin. No sign of the fledglings from last week. Maybe this was due to the cooler weather. Only one robin parent collecting worms for a new group of nestlings and the one-foot papa getting food for one fledglings.
