The hermit and the cardinal

Hermit thrush acts like robin, probes ground for food.   Shy bird.

There's one spot Mr. Cardinal likes.  Juicy worms.

Slicing and dicing.   Worm will get delivered to mate.

Totally dependent

Saturday, in the back garden, checking for migrating birds.  Holy smokes, what's this??? It took a moment for my brain to function.  Not baby doves.  Baby pigeons!  I'd only seen such young pigeons twice before both times removed from balconies and dumped by garbage bins. At this age pigeons are helpless,- can't fly, can't feed themselves.   I didn't notice the twig nest at first but realized after about an hour that most likely someone had removed them, nest and all, from a balcony and abandoned them in the garden. That's a death sentence.  I know... poopy birds, pests, rats with wings,... I've heard it all, but  babies deserve a life. I watched them for about five hours and when their calls for food, squeals, were ignored I ran  for a proper box and carefully caught each (plus nest) and took  them to the Wildlife Rescue place on 87th and Columbus.  They'll be checked, fed and when they are self sufficient released. I love pigeons. I could not leave them to die.  I've told the doormen that I'll help anyone who needs pigeons removed from their balcony, but that's another story.  People don't notice immature pigeons because when they first leave the nest they are almost as big as the adults and look like adults. Only the beak is longer.  These babies were still fuzzy, didn't have flight wings and had their very long beaks with white tip. Totally helpless babies. Beautiful.

Nest building time

Nest building time, getting twigs. Bluejays didn't care that I'm watching, but I still have not found the building site.

Tree nest is active, baby doves, but not easily seen. This is not far from fuse box where second brood is being incubated.

On high

I saw this parent obviously collecting food for nestings. Stopped to watch particularly to follow path to nest. Robin took diversionary steps before going "upstairs", 3rd floor level.  Neat! Three babies in nest, eyes not open yet. Huge mouths. Nest constructed using covid masks. Not the first time. Worms too big, dropped vertically, horizontally. Eventually it all got eaten.  Baby robins are bottomless pits.

Dead yellowbelly sapsucker. Probably collided with window.  Buried. Said Kaddish.
If a worm is dumb enough to cross the path at this time of the year it's not going to get to the other side alive.

A sweet mixture

It was bound to happen. Mama dove is back on the poopy nest. Hatchlings expected in about two weeks, Brood #2
Someone tried building a nest in an awful location, artistic, but not successful.

The brown creeper showed up surprisingly and worked one tree for about three minutes, tiny busy bird.

The regulars, male robin and cardinal pair. They'll be garden residents for a while.
