Robins from up north

The robins in town now are from up north heading south. They're here for one reason. FOOD.  This is a feisty juvenile, a bit ratty from wear, but he's survivor.  The robins are arriving en masse.  These are not our New York regulars. They've already headed south.

Smart little wren

There's a patch of shrubbery right downstairs that the winter wren loves,  bugs under the leaves, lots of tiny tidbits. I've seen this wren three times, not always a photo op. This time it was perfection. I was watching for insects too. I think this tiny bird recognizes me , knows I'm not a threat. Once it moves it scoots very fast.

the Hermit thrush

Berries available = arrival of hermit thrush, a little smaller than a robin, Shy bird.

We've got assorted weird looking fungi in the garden. One looks like pizza. The second is where the hole-in-the-wall  sparrow nest used to be, looks like a red sweet pepper.

Easy pickings

Bugs and bits. The sparrows know what they like and they like this one brush space for bits.  They didn't care that I was watching their lunch feast.

Around the corner the downy woodpecker was also into nibbling, but not for long. Bye bye birdy.

The expected

At this time of year there are lots of bits to be found, but jays are flickers are skittish.

The flicker would have stayed around longer, but a motorcycled gunned down the avenue and every bird took flight.
Finally, the hermit thrushes are arriving. There are berries available.

                                                                      One kinglet.
Munchkin works the sunflower patch.

Bluejay back for bits.
