On the water

The coot was hunting for nibbles in the fallen leaves and feathers. Mallard also joined the search.
Adorable grebes floating about.
Totally uninterested in camera wood ducks.

The feeding station

When it's cold the feeding station is a popular spot.   The European goldfinch loves the seeds. So do the house finches.
Nobody was picking at the berries.

The European

Pretty visitor, the European goldfinch, male.  How did it get here? Escapee? Perhaps. From where? The best I heard was that it escaped from Petco. ( They sell European goldfinches.)  Other overheard : "Pretty bird. He'd be much prettier if he was duck-size."   "I've seen 20 life birds at Petco."   Whatever- this is one gorgeous little bird, domineering, watched him face-off against other birds.
Went into feeder and didn't let any other birds inside.
More goldfinch images to come.

More saw-whet

Still testing little camera.  Very nice for wide images.
How to find an owl. Look for "whitewash", in this case splat plus pellets.  There were 3 pellets, which Tom collected to show his biology students.  The little owl had been seen eating a mouse earlier.
Sleep, preen, look around,- the daytime routine.  Fascinating and endearing face.
More tomorrow.
