From April 30th

Cottoneaster blossoms, catbird lunch
Catering service, organic peanut butter. Downy woodpecker loves the goo.
And then the squirrel takes over.
Redwing blackbird, young male
The redheaded woodpecker has since taken off for natural food, but it was a joy seeing it at the feeders.
Oh, good grief!  Can't you pose correctly.
                                                         Okay, you have two seconds.

Affordable housing

It costs less if you build yourself.  Ambitious sparrows. If it's there they'll carry it upstairs. Nest high in a tree.
Female and male involved in house construction.
If I hadn't seen sparrows flying in and out I would have missed this nest, tiny hole into metal post. Solid house.
And down on West End Avenue, light fixture. Just look at the junk the sparrows have incorporated.

Something new

Kingfisher at Turtle Pond. This is when I wish  had an 800mm lens. Of course I can't hand hold one, but it would be nice.
Having a cardinal chat. Food please?
Hermit thrush, skittish
New York birds will eat anything
Pigeons read. Menu posted.

Beauty on the path

Late afternoon, ready to leave the park after having seen almost nothing. On path, startling red, a male scarlet tanager. He probably just flew into the park after a long migration trip, landed just outside of Strawberry Field and had no more energy to fly. Walking on the path was fine as far as he was concerned. Lots of tourists. Out came the cell phones to take pictures. That area is all green, brown, grey and here was this blast of red. I coaxed him into the ivy area. Being on the path was not safe. It could fly short distances, mostly up and down. It was finding food, bugs and worms.  The rain today will help it bathe.  There are tanagers at this time of year, but I've never before met a "grounder".
There's nothing like a red beauty to make a person smile and feel good.

Water "Ballet"

Beautiful egret. Want your picture taken?  My pleasure.
                                                         Looks like a exclamation mark.
