I've met lots of robins. In the hot weather birds will sit with their mouths open. It's their way of cooling off. I've never before met an open-mouthed robin when the temperature was 38F. And it stayed that way for a good three minutes despite my presence and the bone-chilling air. Eventually it shut its mouth and resumed worming. Beats me what was going on. It wasn't singing.
