I've seen birds anting before.... prone on the ground, but I'd never before seen this, the mourning doves on their sides wings fully extended. I stood silently for about 40 minutes not far away and watched their ritual. Totally beautiful. Hunkered down they blend with the leaves. Wing extended could make them a raptor target. That's why I stayed. No sensible hawk will swoop down with a human standing watch. |
