A sound, a glimpse

 A lot of birding is listening. I heard the call of the baby then watched for activity. This was not an ideal visual situation. The parent cardinals try to protect their kids, leaf cover from above and below.  Both parents were bringing food. There wasn't a clear viewing spot. Dappled light didn't help. This baby is not a brand new fledgling.

This is one big bug and it's going to go down the hatch bit by bit.

The family flew off in the afternoon. Can't find them again.

I won't follow this nest. Need to move around.

Not seeing or hearing juvenile starlings. Adults so pretty.

One survivor

Mother Nature can be cruel. Of the two remaining robin babies the alpha Baby fledged nest successfully. Second baby got snarled in nest material and dangled upside down outside nest. It did not survive.  Alpha Baby made it across path to another part of garden attended to by Papa.  It hopped around, flew at low level, was most comfortable resting in low bush. This is standard with new fledglings.

To find this baby in days to come I'll have to hear the call for food. It may be very hard to find this kid again. It's a big world for a baby robin.

Not easy news

Only two big babies in nest. No sign of the third baby who had been inert the day before.

On rim of nest. Sturdy enough to fledge.

Went looking. Found the third baby on ground obviously removed from nest by parent. Cause of death unknown. Perhaps internal defect.

Still no movement

Two babies rambunctious.  Third baby at bottom immobile. Hasn't moved for hours..

Something is definitely the matter with bottom baby.
