Soft ground

Soft ground. Delicious seeds. Worms. In January???
Tempting stuff even for the redbelly woodpecker.

Water pretty

Bobbing around in the reservoir... lots of pretties.  First the coot.
I think grebes smile. Fascinating feather coloration.
The best "hairdo". Female merganser.

Choke it down

I've seen this before, endlessly funny, food bigger than allotted space.  Choke it down.  Perhaps not.
If there had been some water nearby perhaps a wet coating would have helped, but there was no water and silly grackle flew off, chestnut in beak before I could see the final chapter.

The owl tree- Jan. 10th

Lots of action in the owl tree, former owl tree.  It took a bit of moving around to see what was causing the stir.  One cooper's hawk, lots of teasing squirrels.
Add one redtail hawk to the mix
When the redtail flew off the cooper's chased it. All squirrels survived and were bouncing from tree to tree when I left.

Goose face-off

All from Jan. 17th.  I don't know what started the fuss, but first goose was mighty pissed. I couldn't back up, so was stuck with what I could get. It happened very fast.
Second goose never batted an eyelash, not that they have eye lashes. What's the fuss about?
All calm again after about three minutes.

A little intimacy

There's a small section of the garden that's fenced off for construction. The birds like this spot. No pedestrians. This was a case of being in the right place at the right time, good for the pigeons, good for the camera. It's never too cold for sex.
Mission accomplished. They went their separate ways.
