Food priorities

Delicious peanut butter mash. This gets devoured fast. Yellowbellied sapsucker.

Redbelly woodpecker.

Pretty fox sparrow after seeds on the rock.

Snow is on the way. This is a "melter" . If there's enough snow there will be new snow people on the lawn.

Light-Play

Endlessly fascinating, soap-light-park.

And there are also bird colors.

A favorite

Mmmmmmm, food down the hole for the Carolina wren. Getting food was more a concern than worrying about a gawking bird lover.

This elaborate nest has fallen from above. Somebody found great house-building material. A real work of art. Photo taken Christmas Day.

Dining

Happiness. One Carolina wren singing.

The small birds were active, calm, knowing that the hawk was no danger. It had its food supply.

It really has a red belly.

Time for some delicious peanutbutter mash.

A fine show

While I've still got some 2010 leftovers to post I'll blend them in with the new images. The small birds know when danger is lurking. They immediately flee into the brush for cover. But yesterday they knew that the hawk was no danger. The hawk had its own food, no danger.

There's a lot of food in a squirrel, but it's a real hassle getting to the good stuff.

The hawks are such neat eaters. They get the fur (or feathers) out of the way, then pull out the bit of meat they want. Every once in a while they pause, rest. They don't gorge. When I sloshed off there was still lots of meat to this squirrel. (There will be more pictures.)

Special day

It's a new year, another beginning. I wanted today's park trek to be good. Would paths be clear, safe? What was ice yesterday was slosh today, not exactly safe, but definitely negotiable even if messy.

The big bubble blower was creating his magic. It's endlessly fascinating and beautiful. People walked by without even noticing.

And there in the snow was the best..... lucky redtail. Poor squirrel. Didn't get to survive this new year. There's a lot of fur till you get to the meat. Fur yanked out and strewn all over the place.

This is just a teaser. I've got about 400 hawk-dining images and must cull that down to a few.
What a joy. Hawk had a meal. Birders got to gawk at hawk.
Bubble litter from last night's celebration.

Happy New Year!
