The youngster

Never saw this before, a first summer male redwing blackbird, preening in a solitary space. The flash of orange caught my eye, so I stopped to watch. The grooming went on for about 20 minutes interspersed with calls. I was happy to stand and watch, because the calls could have attracted a hawk.
It was one of those days, cozy in the grass.
