The young and the survivors

Young robin checking tree bark for food
Twigs not edible.
A new dove nest under construction
Mulberry seeds being devoured
This is the stepping stone dove. I watched it all morning. Sadly it went to bird heaven   between 2-4 p.m.  Cause of death hard to tell. It had shifted position all during the morning, but behavior lethargic and flies and one beetle on its body, sure sign of impeding demise. Body disposed of while a couple of children watched. Not morbid or disgusting. Usual questions. "Why did it die?"  "Where does it go now?" "Are there more doves?" "Can I touch it?"  I brought lots of plastic gloves for training how to dispose of dead birds.  The children's fascination lasted about 5 minutes. Poor dove was stiff as a board.
